1 Collaborative Planning
What is Collaborative Planning? Collaborative planning is when teachers, library media specialists, and technology specialists plan together to create exciting learning experiences. The collaboration is done during the planning, implementation, and assessment stages. The overall goal is to best utilize the media equipment, capitalize on specific skills held by media specialists, and to create dynamic programs that lead to student learning. What does the Research Say? Collaboration between media specialist and teachers can significantly affect student achievement. Key Factors: Environment – Collaborations work best in schools where administrators create a climate open to collaboration and where flexibility and adaptability are seen as assets. Staff relationships – Collaborations work best where there is mutual respect between teachers and media specialists and the partners are willing to compromise. Both participants should be able to meet some of their goals through the partnership. School Structure – Collaboration works best when there are clear roles and responsibilities for each collaborator. Communication – There is ample opportunity for both formal and informal staff discussions. Research About Collaboration - Haycock, 2004

How School Librarians Help Kids Achieve Standards – The Second Colorado Study “A central finding of this study is the importance of a collaborative approach to information literacy. Test scores rise in both elementary and middle schools as library media specialists and teachers work together. In addition, scores also increase with the amount of time library media specialists spend as in-service trainers of other teachers, acquainting them with the rapidly changing world of information.” Test scores increase as library media specialists spend more time: planning cooperatively with teachers, identifying materials for teachers, teaching information literacy skills to students, providing in-service training to teachers, and managing a computer network through which the library media program reaches beyond its own walls to classrooms, labs, and offices.
