Information The unities were invented by Aristotle (335 BCE) They are used to define what is a proper tragedy and what is not They are also known as: classical unities, Aristotelian unities and three unities

Unity One The first unity is action A play should have one main action that it follows, with no or few subplots The play should have one main focus

Unity Two The second unity is place A play should cover a single physical space and should not attempt to compress geography, nor should the stage represent more than one place A play should only have one setting

Unity Three The third unity is time The action in a play should take place over no more than 24 hours Everything that needs to happen must be within the 24 hours
