1 Acc. Int. PreCalculusName ________________________ Biorhythms Project Biorhythm Theory tells us that there are three phenomena that control a person’s biological functioning. These phenomena are said to all be sinusoidal in nature and vary with time. In this lab, we will use the graphs of three simple sine functions to make predictions about your physical, emotional, and intellectual potential for a particular day. Each of these sine functions are given by y = Asin(Bx) where x = 0 corresponds to a person’s day of birth and where A = 1 will be used to represent 100% potential. (Recall that B affects the period). According to Biorhythm Theory when a person’s physical cycle is close to a high point, then the person can do well in physical activities. Similar statements can be made for emotional and intellectual potential. The physical cycle has a period of 23 days. What would the physical biorhythm equation be? The emotional cycle has a period of 28 days. What would the emotional biorhythm equation be? The intellectual cycle has a period of 33 days. What would the intellectual biorhythm equation be? Calculate the number of days you have been alive as of today. Don’t forget leap years! Use 365 for normal years and 366 for leap years. Show your calculations. You and your partner are to make a power point presentation. Use a graphing application, make three graphs: One will contain the physical biorhythms of you and your partner. The second will contain the emotional biorhythms of you and your partner, and the third will contain the intellectual biorhythms. Put these three graphs on separate slides. Make sure to use different colors to distinguish your biorhythm from your partner’s. Also be sure to include a legend so that anyone knows which biorhythm belongs to whom. For the domain of your graph, the x-min should be the number of days you have been alive. Add 30 days to this number (for a typical month) and this will be your x-max. In your presentation include the following (minimum): 1. What day(s) are each of you best physically? Show these points on your graph. (Use some type of symbol to mark the point –star, smiley, etc.) 2. What day(s) are each of you best emotionally? Show these points (with a symbol)on your graph. 3. Each of you are to pick a day that will be important to you in the near future. Ex: SAT Will it be a good intellectual day for you? Put this day on your intellectual graph. Explain which dates each of you chose and why. 4. Suppose you and your partner are competing against each other in an athletic event on the 10 th day of your physical graph. Who would win? Show these points on the graph (with a symbol). 5. On the day of your birth, all three cycles were zero. How often would you expect this to occur in your lifetime? Why? *Be creative with your presentation (no one wants to be read to!) Your project will be graded based on: 1. The organization of the presentation.2. Were the directions followed? 3. The mathematical accuracy 4. Creativity
