GES DISC Lines of Business May 10-11, 2011

The GES DISC Lines of Business allow us to categorize our efforts into specific focus areas They help us in deciding what potential new activities we should pursue They help us evaluate whether our activities are still valid in consideration of evolving information management and technologies What do we Mean by Lines of Business (LOB)

GES DISC LOB - 2007

GES DISC 2007 Projected Percentage / 2011 Actual Percentage LOB2007 Projected Percentage 2011 Actual Percentage Community Technology Development 102 Data Services2025 Measurement Based Systems 55 Certified Data Archive00 Mission Support50 Data Broker57 Inter Data Use107 Data Stewardship4

Provide, for reuse, technologies for scientific data management and analysis Examples: S4PA, S4PM 1. Technology Services

2. Data Services Develop and provide services for scientific data that are resident either here or elsewhere. Examples: Giovanni, Mirador, subsetting, OPeNDAP, value added products, NRT

3. Measurement Based Systems Produce, archive and distribute long-term climatic measurements. Examples: Ocean Color (in the past), MEaSUREs Project Results

4. Certified Data Archive Did not make the cut

5. Mission Support Provide data systems that support science missions. (includes system sustainment, operations and basic data support) Examples: Existing GES DISC Mission Support

6. Data Broker Acquire, archive and distribute data (and services on that data) that are otherwise difficult to get Examples: Value added products through Giovanni

7. Inter Data Use Multi-sensor processing and archive Examples: A-Train, NEESPI, MAIRS

GES DISC 2007 Projected Percentage / 2011 Actual Percentage LOB2007 Projected Percentage 2011 Actual Percentage Community Technology Development 102 Data Services2025 Measurement Based Systems 55 Certified Data Archive00 Mission Support50 Data Broker57 Inter Data Use107 Data Stewardship4

Differences Between Projected and Actual Percentages LOB2007 Projected 2011 Actual Why! Community Technology Development 102Not a lot of opportunities have come up to enable software reuse; Also, DESDynI was prematurely ended Data Services2025Soft funding enhanced the amount of work in this area Inter Data Use107Dependent on soft funding; Received some but hoped for more Data Stewardship4Addition of Earth Science Data: Tape Recovery and EP-TOMS data archive projects

Discussion Are these LOBs appropriate to facilitate science? Are these LOBs consistent with satisfying user needs? Are these the correct approximate percentages (priorities)? If not, what would be a better mix? What other LOBs would you recommend? Should any be removed? What ideas do you have in helping us pursue the LOBs?
