3 PHYSIOLOGY & ANATOMY  10-15 ft. average  Have 2 dorsal fins big and small  Big caudal fin on the end  Since they have gills they don’t need to surface to breathe  3,000-5,000 lb. average  Sharp triangular teeth(up to 300 and in rows)  Incredible sense of smell  Have an organ called the olfactory bulb that can sense electromagnetic fields made by prey and the earth  Blue,Grey, and/or White skin

4 HABITAT & NICHE  Cool, coastal salt and freshwater throughout the world except northern and southern areas  Predator that balances its ecosystem  Offshore reefs, banks, and deep waters close to shore

5 SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS  Remoras attach to bottom of sharks for easier travel (Commensalism)

6 REPRODUCTION  Up to 2 years long  ASEXUAL-rare but it helps defend against other species  VIVIPARITY-Eggs hatch inside the female body (live birth) 2-20 offspring born  OVIPARITY-Unguarded eggs get deposited into the ocean and will eventually hatch if not eaten  APLACENTAL VIVIPARITY-Eggs inside the female body. The babies eat each other because of the absence of a placenta causing few to survive

7 REPRODUCTIVE BENEFITS FOR SURVIVAL  Produce healthy offspring most of the time  Produce a lot of offspring which is good for survival for the species

8 THREATS & ENVIROMENTAL HAZARDS  SHARK NETS-Nets designed to keep sharks out of water near beaches  DRUMLINES-Giant hooks to catch the deadliest sharks  Orca (Killer Whales)

9 THREATS GREAT WHITE SHARKS POSE TO OTHERS  It’s a top predator so its eats a lot of other aquatic animals  Attacks humans (rare)

10 IMPORTANCE OF GREAT WHITE SHARKS  As a top predator it maintains balance in its ecosystem
