1.Explain how “mercantilism” and trade restrictions lead to tension between the colonists & the British in North America.

From a text assignment that received 9 points out of a possible 15: Why??

#1 Mercantilism was a system that helped England and hurt the colonies. The Americans were supposed to give a bunch of stuff to England and did not get much in return. It was an unfair system. No wonder the Americans revolted from England.

#2 Most English colonies in the new world were seen as business ventures by their founders. The people who founded the colonies wanted to make money for themselves and the mother country – England. The system of trade between the “mother country” and colonies that evolved was called “mercantilism”. The colonies produced a lot of raw materials and supplied the British but did no get much in return making the King angry.

#3 Mercantilism was a system of trade between a mother (ex: England) and its colonies (ex: America) that eventually lead to tensions. Under mercantilism, the mother country (England) imported cheap raw materials from a colony (America) and had exclusive rights to sell manufactured goods back to the colonists. In return, the colonists also had opportunities to make money and enjoyed the rights of English citizens and the protection of the British military. The British enforced mercantilism with laws called Navigation Acts. Colonists often ignored these restrictive laws by smuggling products thereby angering British leaders.

#3 England pursued a policy known as mercantilism which determined its economic and political relations with the American colonists. The American colonies were expected to export food and basic commodities to the mother country and their sister colonies. Exports from America gave England an edge in its ongoing competition with other European powers. In times of war, the colonies were protected by the English military from attacks by England’s European rivals and their Native American allies.
