5. VISION (EYES)  CORNEA: Clear outer covering  IRIS: Color; muscles; regulates light  RETINA: inner eye; receives images  RODS: detects light  CONES: detects color

6. EYE CARE  Use water to flush eye, do not rub it!  Eye Protection  Avoid prolonged sun exposure.  UV-B causes cataracts (clouding of lens)

7. HEARING (EARS)  OUTER EAR: Auricle, auditory canal, tympanic membrane  MIDDLE EAR: Malleus, incus, staples  INNER EAR: oval window, cochlea, semicircular canals

9. Hearing Loss  Damage to ears from extremely high intensity sounds or prolonged exposure to high intensity sounds.  Cumulative effect: small damage may not be noticed; builds over time; irreversible.  Prevention: Protection, avoidance

11. SMELL and TASTE  Odors and tastes come from chemicals  Olfactory Area: nasal area where odors are detected.  Taste Buds: sweet, sour, bitter, salty  Umani: “beefy”

12. SYNESTHESIA  Joined sensation  “Sixth sense”  Stimulation of one sense creates simultaneous response in another sense.
