Chapter 6: Safeguarding Your Senses  VISION  HEARING  TOUCH  SMELL  TASTE

Bell Ringer (10/7)  What are common harmful effects to the eyes/vision? How can you protect your eyes?

BELL RINGER (10/8) Hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud noises. When listening to music can you tell if the volume is too loud/causing damage? Are there warning signs of hearing loss?

Bell Ringer (10/10)  If you could give up one of your five senses for a super power, would you do it? What sense would you go without? What superpower would you have?

VISION (EYES)  CORNEA: Clear outer covering  IRIS: Color; muscles; regulates light  RETINA: inner eye; receives images  RODS: detects light  CONES: detects color

EYE CARE  Use water to flush eye, do not rub it!  Eye Protection  Avoid prolonged sun exposure.  UV-B causes cataracts (clouding of lens)

HEARING (EARS)  OUTER EAR: Auricle, auditory canal, tympanic membrane  MIDDLE EAR: Malleus, incus, staples  INNER EAR: oval window, cochlea, semicircular canals

Sound  Vibration of material  Frequency: pitch (hertz; Hz)  Intensity: loudness (decibels; db)

Hearing Loss  Damage to ears from extremely high intensity sounds or prolonged exposure to high intensity sounds.  Cumulative effect: small damage may not be noticed; builds over time; irreversible.  Prevention: Protection, avoidance

TOUCH  Receptors in the skin  Pressure  Vibration  Temperature  Pain

SMELL and TASTE  Odors and tastes come from chemicals  Olfactory Area: nasal area where odors are detected.  Taste Buds: sweet, sour, bitter, salty  Umani: “beefy”

SYNESTHESIA  Joined sensation  “Sixth sense”  Stimulation of one sense creates simultaneous response in another sense.

KEY TERMS  Cones  Cornea  Iris  Malleus, Incus, Staples  Olfactory Area  Power of Accommodation  Retina  Cones  Semicircular Canals  Tympanic Membrane
