3 Transmission Performance The following transmission performance categories of cabling components are used in the Signamax Cabling System: category 6A 100-Ohm unscreened twisted-pair or screened twisted-pair four-pair cables whose transmission characteristics are specified up to 500 MHz category 6 100-Ohm unscreened twisted-pair or screened twisted-pair four-pair cables whose transmission characteristics are specified up to 250 MHz continued on next slide

4 Transmission Performance category 5e 100-Ohm unscreened twisted-pair or screened twisted- pair four-pair cables whose transmission characteristics are specified up to 100 MHz category 5 100-Ohm unscreened twisted-pair or screened twisted- pair multipair cables whose transmission characteristics are specified up to 100 MHz category 3 100-Ohm unscreened twisted-pair or screened twisted- pair multipair cables whose transmission characteristics are specified up to 16 MHz

5 Transmission Performance Category/level 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 four-pair twisted-pair cables are not recognized as part of the Signamax Cabling System. Category/level 1, 2, and 4 multipair twisted-pair cables are not recognized as part of the Signamax Cabling System. Multipair twisted-pair cables with 3 and 5 categories of transmission performance can be used only in Backbone subsystems of the Signamax Cabling System to transmit signals of low rate applications such as analog and digital telephony. Such cables do not undergo certification testing and are not covered by the application warranty.

6 Horizontal Subsystem Cables  1 Twisted-pair cables used in Horizontal cabling subsystem shall be allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

7 Horizontal Subsystem Cables A list of twisted-pair cables permitted in the Horizontal cabling subsystem of the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. The cables allowed in the Signamax Cabling System satisfy the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

8 Horizontal Subsystem Cables  2 The use of multipair twisted-pair cables of any transmission performance category in the Horizontal cabling subsystem of the Signamax Cabling System is not allowed.

9 Horizontal Subsystem Cables  3 The use of bundled cables in the Horizontal cabling subsystem of the Signamax Cabling System is not allowed.

11 Backbone Subsystem Cables  4 Twisted-pair cables used in Backbone cabling subsystem shall be allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

12 Backbone Subsystem Cables A list of twisted-pair cables allowed in the Backbone cabling subsystem of the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. The cables permitted in the Signamax Cabling System satisfy the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

13 Backbone Subsystem Cables  1 Multipair twisted-pair cables with category 3 and 5 transmission performance can be used only in the Backbone subsystem of the Signamax Cabling System. Multipair cables should only be used to transmit congenerical signals of low rate telecommunications applications (with 1 MHz operation frequency range). Such cables do not undergo certification testing and are not covered by the application warranty.

16 Inside plant cables 2- and 4-fiber cables intended for Horizontal or centralized cabling shall support a bend radius of 25 mm (1 in) under no- load conditions. 2- and 4-fiber cables intended to be pulled through Horizontal pathways during installation shall support a bend radius of 50 mm (2 in) under a pull load of 222 N (50 lbf). All other inside plant cables shall support a bend radius of 10 times the cable outside diameter when not subject to tensile load, and 15 times the cable outside diameter when subject to tensile loading up to the cable’s rated limit.

17 Outside plant cables Outside plant optical fiber cables shall be of a water-block construction. Outdoor cables shall have a minimum pull strength of 2,670 N (600 lbf). Outside plant cables shall support a bend radius of 10 times the cable outside diameter when not subject to tensile load, and 20 times the cable outside diameter when subject to tensile loading up to the cable’s rated limit.

18 Horizontal Subsystem Cables  5 Optical fiber cables used in the Horizontal cabling subsystem shall be approved by Signamax Connectivity Systems for use in the Signamax Cabling System.

19 Horizontal Subsystem Cables A list of optical fiber cables allowed in the Horizontal cabling subsystem of the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. The cables permitted in the Signamax Cabling System satisfy the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

20 Horizontal Subsystem Cables  2 Although singlemode optical fiber cables are allowed to be used in the Horizontal cabling subsystem, they should be applied only in exceptional cases (for example, if required by the end user or special norms), because at distances typical for Horizontal subsystem (with Channel length up to 100 m (328 ft)), multimode fibers support all telecommunications applications existing at the time this Manual edition is effective. Application of a singlemode optical fiber cable in the Horizontal cabling subsystem is economically unreasonable.

21 Backbone Subsystem Cables  6 Optical fiber cables used in the Backbone cabling subsystem shall be approved by Signamax Connectivity Systems for use in the Signamax cabling System.

22 Backbone Subsystem Cables A list of optical fiber cables allowed in the Backbone cabling subsystem of the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. The cables permitted in the Signamax Cabling System satisfy the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

24 Connecting Hardware  7 Balanced twisted-pair connecting hardware used in the Signamax Cabling System shall be Signamax connecting hardware and allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

25 Connecting Hardware A list of twisted-pair connecting hardware allowed in the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. The connecting hardware allowed in the Signamax Cabling System satisfies the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

26 Connecting Hardware The usage of connecting hardware for the 100-Ohm twisted- pair UTP cabling system shall be limited by the following functional elements of the Signamax Cabling System: –Main Cross-connect –Intermediate Cross-connects –Horizontal Cross-connects –Consolidation Points –Telecommunications Outlets/connectors

27 Connecting Hardware The Signamax Cabling System DP&IP does not address requirements for –equipment connectors, –media adapters, –impedance matching transformers, –ISDN resistors, –MAUs, –filters, –network interface devices –protection devices, –or other devices utilizing passive or active electronic circuitry, which aim to serve a specific application or provide safety compliance Such cabling adapters and protection devices are viewed as premises equipment that are not regarded to be part of the cabling system.

30 Design The Signamax cross-connect hardware used to terminate to 100-Ohm balanced twisted-pair cabling is designed to provide: –means to cross-connect cables with cross-connect jumpers or patch cords –means to connect premises equipment to the 100 Ohm UTP network –means to identify circuits for administration in accordance with the “CABLING SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION” section –means to use standard colors as specified in the “CABLING SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION” section to functionally identify mechanical termination fields continued on next slide

31 Design The Signamax cross-connect hardware used to terminate to 100-Ohm balanced twisted-pair cabling is designed to provide: –means of handling wire and cable to permit orderly management –means of access to monitor or test cabling and premises equipment –means for protecting exposed terminals, an insulating barrier, such as a cover or a plastic shroud, for protecting terminals from accidental contact with foreign objects that may disturb electrical continuity

32 Screened Connecting Hardware The Signamax screened twisted-pair connecting hardware is designed for use with 100-Ohm unscreened and screened twisted-pair cables. To ensure effective screening, all cabling components should be screened, meet the requirements for transfer impedance, and all screens should be properly bonded. Screening shall be continuous for the complete Channel. Work Area cords, cross-connect cords, equipment cords and the equipment connection, while not part of the generic cabling, shall provide screen continuity. Screened outlets should be labeled or otherwise identified to distinguish them from unscreened connectors and demonstrate the need for screened Work Area cords.

33 Mechanical Requirements The Signamax connecting hardware used to terminate to 100-Ohm balanced twisted-pair cabling is functional for continuous use over the temperature range from –10 ºC to 60 ºC (14 ºF to 140 ºF). Modular jacks of the Signamax connecting hardware are designed for at least 750 modular plug couplings of appropriate design (8c8p).

35 Connecting Hardware  8 Optical fiber connecting hardware used in the Signamax Cabling System shall be Signamax optical fiber connecting hardware and allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

36 Connecting Hardware A list of optical fiber connecting hardware allowed in the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. The optical fiber connecting hardware allowed to be used in the Signamax Cabling System satisfies the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

37 Connectors and Adaptors The Signamax connector designs meet the requirements of the corresponding TIA FOCIS (Fiber Optic Connector Intermateability Standard) document. Optical fiber connectors and adapters should be identifiable by the following colors: –OM1 (62.5/125-μm)beige –OM2 (50/125-μm)black –OM3 (850-nm laser-optimized 50/125-μm)aqua –OM4 (850-nm laser-optimized 50/125-μm)aqua –flat-end single-modeblue –angled-end single-mode connectors and adaptersgreen

38 Connectors and Adaptors The two fiber positions in a 568SC connector and the corresponding 568SC adapter shall be referred to as Position A and Position B. The two positions of the 568SC adapter shall be identified as Position A and Position B by using the letter designators A and B respectively. Labeling may be either field or factory made.

40 Splices The Signamax Connectivity Systems does not produce mechanical splices, but allows using them in the Signamax Cabling System. Optical fiber splices used in the Signamax Cabling System, fusion or mechanical, shall not exceed a maximum optical attenuation of 0.3 dB. Optical fiber splices, fusion or mechanical used in the Signamax Cabling System shall have a minimum return loss of 20 dB for multimode, 26 dB for singlemode.

41 Design The Signamax optical fiber patch panels and enclosures are designed to provide a: –means to cross-connect cabling with patch cords –means to interconnect premises equipment to the optical fiber cabling –means to identify cabling for administration in accordance with the “CABLING SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION” section of this Manual –means to use standard colors to functionally identify termination groups per the “CABLING SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION” section of this Manual continued on next slide

42 Design The Signamax optical fiber patch panels and enclosures are designed to provide a: –means of handling optical fiber cables and patch cords, and to promote orderly management –means of access to monitor or test optical fiber cabling and premises equipment –means of adequate protection for connectors and adapters on the cabling side from accidental contact with foreign objects that may temporarily or permanently degrade the optical performance

43 Design  9 The Telecommunications Outlet box shall be capable as a minimum of housing two terminated optical fibers, have the ability to secure the optical fiber cable and provide for a minimum fiber bend radius of 25 mm (1 in).

45 Transmission Performance The following categories of equipment and patch cords transmission performance are used in the Signamax Cabling System: category 6A four-pair 100-Ohm unscreened twisted-pair or screened twisted-pair equipment and patch cords with transmission characteristics up to 500 MHz category 6 four-pair 100-Ohm unscreened twisted-pair or screened twisted-pair equipment and patch cords with transmission characteristics up to 250 MHz category 5e four-pair 100-Ohm unscreened twisted-pair or screened twisted-pair equipment and patch cords with transmission characteristics up to 100 MHz Category/level 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 equipment and patch cords are not recognized as part of the Signamax Cabling System.

46 Stranded Cable  10 Stranded twisted-pair cables used to assemble equipment and patch cords in the Signamax Cabling System shall be allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

47 Stranded Cable A list of twisted-pair stranded cables allowed in the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. Stranded cables allowed in the Signamax Cabling System satisfy the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA- 568 standards.

48 Stranded Cable  11 Insertion loss (IL) parameters for stranded cables over the entire operation frequency range shall not be beyond the insertion loss values for solid cables of the same transmission performance categories multiplied by correction factor: category 5е cables: – with 24 AWG conductors – 1.2 – with 26 AWG conductors – 1.5 with category 6 and 6a cables: – with 22 – 24 AWG conductors – 1.2

49 Unscreened Cords  12 Unscreened twisted-pair equipment and patch cords used in the Signamax Cabling System shall be Signamax cords and allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

50 Unscreened Cords A list of equipment and patch cords allowed in the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. The cords allowed for application in the Signamax Cabling System satisfy the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

51 Unshielded Cords The Signamax Cabling System allows field assembling of unshielded twisted-pair cords using certain types of plugs, which provide the assemblies with category 5e and 6 transmission performance.

52 Unscreened Cords  13 The cables used for unscreened equipment and patch cords assembling designed for application in the Signamax Cabling System shall have stranded conductors, meet the requirements of “4.3.1.2 Stranded conductor cable” subsection of the Manual, and be allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

53 Unscreened Cords  14 Plugs used for filed assembling of unscreened equipment and patch cords designed for application in the Signamax Cabling System shall meet the requirements of “4.2.1 Balanced twisted-pair connecting hardware” subsection of this Manual, be Signamax plugs and allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

54 Unscreened Cords A list of plugs used for filed assembling of equipment and patch cords allowed in the Signamax Cabling System is given the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. Plugs allowed for usage in the Signamax Cabling System satisfy the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

55 Unscreened Cords  15 The use of solid cables to field assemble equipment and patch cords is not allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

56 Unscreened Cords  16 The use of unscreened solid and stranded cables as well as their pairs without outer jackets as cross- connect jumpers is prohibited in the Signamax Cabling System. Only modular patch cords must be used to form such connections.

57 Screened Cords  17 Screened twisted-pair cords used in the Signamax Cabling System shall be Signamax cords and permitted in the Signamax Cabling System.

58 Screened Cords A list of screened equipment and patch cords allowed in the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. The cords allowed for usage in the Signamax Cabling System meet the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

59 Screened Cords  18 Field assembling of screened twisted-pair cords of any type is not allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

60 Screened Cords The Signamax equipment and patch cords meet the standard transfer impedance requirements after being subjected to 500 flex cycles within the minimum bend radii. When using screened cords with 24-AWG stranded conductors, insertion loss values shall not be beyond those specified for 24 AWG solid cables taking into consideration correction factor 1.2. When using screened cords with 26 AWG stranded conductors, insertion loss values shall not be beyond those specified for 24 AWG solid conductor cables taking into consideration correction factor 1.5.

61 Screened Cords  19 The use of screened solid and stranded cables as well as their pairs without outer jackets as cross-connect jumpers is not allowed in the Signamax Cabling System. Only modular patch cords must be used to form such connections.

62 EQUIPMENT CABLES AND PATCH CORDS Optical Fiber

63 Optical Fiber Cords  20 Optical fiber equipment and patch cords used in the Signamax Cabling System shall be Signamax cords and allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

64 Optical Fiber Cords A list of optical fiber equipment and patch cords allowed in the Signamax Cabling System is given in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule. The cords allowed for usage in the Signamax Cabling System satisfy the requirements of ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568 standards.

65 Optical Fiber Cords  21 Field assembling of optical fiber equipment and patch cords of any type is not allowed in the Signamax Cabling System.

66 Optical Fiber Cords Optical fiber equipment and patch cords, whether they are used for cross-connection or interconnection to active equipment, shall have such orientation that Position A goes to Position B on one fiber, and Position B goes to Position A on the other fiber of the fiber pair.

67 Optical Fiber Cords Each end of the optical fiber equipment and patch cord shall be identified to designate Position A and Position B if the connector can be separated into its simplex components. For alternate connector designs employing latches, the latch defines the positioning in the same way as the keys. For simplex connectors, the connector that plugs into the receiver shall be considered Position A, and the connector that plugs into the transmitter shall be considered Position B.
