FYI: Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) 17 th century scientist Made observations about the world. Newton’s Laws of Motion explain why objects move or don’t move and describe how balanced and unbalanced forces act to cause these states of motion.

Newton’s First Law of Motion (Also known as the Law of Inertia) An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will continue in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Inertia Matter’s resistance to change. Everything that has mass has inertia. The more mass in an object, the more inertia it has and the more it resists change.

Inertia Inertia causes the man in the car to continue moving forward, even when the car bounces back off the wall.

Think About It… Which is more difficult to move, a jar of marbles or a jar of plastic foam peanuts?
