1 Math Subtract Integers
2
2 What Are You Learning? I CAN subtract integers.
3
3 Why Do You Need To Know This? Subtracting integers is useful because it helps in solving real world problems.
4
4 Subtract Integers To subtract an integer, add its opposite. LEAVE – CHANGE - OPPOSITE 4 – 9 = 4 + (-9) = -5 2 – 5 = 2 + (-5) = -3 2 – (-5) = 2 + 5 = 7
5
5 a) 1 – 5 b) -2 – 1 c) -3 – 4 d) 0 – 5 Subtracting Integers – use a number line to double check your work!
6
6 Subtracting Positive Integers a. 8 – 13 b. -10 – 7 c. 2 – 15
7
7 -3 – 6 1. -3 2. 9 3. 3 4. -9
8
8 Subtracting Negative Integers Remember – add the opposite! Change subtraction to addition, then change the sign of the second number. a. 1 – (-2) b. -10 – (-7) c. 4 – (-12) d. -15 – (-5)
9
9 29 – (-24) 1. -53 2. 5 3. 53 4. -5
10
10 -16 – (-8) 1. -24 2. -8 3. 24 4. 8
11
11 Complete the following problems. a. -13 – 8 b. 12 – (-6) c. 21 – (-8)
12
12 Complete the following problems. a. 32 – (-3) b. -40 – 66 c. 2 – 48 d. -7 – (-5) e. -24 – (-5) f. 19 – (-4) g. -33 – 11 h. 14 – 46 i. -200 – 50 – (-10)
13
13 Complete the following problems. a. -6 – (-2) b. -7 - (-2) c. -4 – (-3) d. -8 – (-5) e. 4 – 8 f. -1 – 5 g. -2 – (-7) h. In January 1916 the temperature in Browning, Montana, fell 100 degrees overnight. The initial temperature was 44ºF. What was the final temperature?
