Maths Workshop The New National Curriculum 2014

In 2014 the new National Curriculum becomes statutory. The aims of the maths curriculum are: Fluency Reason mathematically e.g. finding proof, generalising Problem solving

What are we doing in school to encourage fluency? Changed the number bonds scheme- 3 minutes to complete questions. Cannot progress until they have all the question correct. Big Maths Tuesday- levelled mental maths tests Every child has a differentiated mental maths book to work through for Early Morning Work

Expectations of the Maths Curriculum Most concepts will be covered a year earlier than they currently are Times tables will be expected to be learnt by Year 4 New concepts such as Roman numerals, naming parts of a circle and a greater emphasis on algebra are included

Examples of games that can be played Multiplication games- speed tables, counter games Mathletics Every day maths- adding number plates on cars, adding whilst in a supermarket etc.

What are we doing in school to promote problem solving and reasoning? Homework once a term with a problem solving focus Assessing problem solving pieces once a term, with a levelled outcome Looking at planning and teaching through problem solving where possible Maths week has a problem solving theme Creating a classroom ethos where it is acceptable to make mistakes

Types of problem solving Logic Finding patterns and rules Finding all possibilities Diagram and visual problems
