“Forensic” comes from the Latin word “forensis” meaning forum. During the time of the Romans, a criminal charge meant presenting the case before the public. Both the person accused of the crime & the accuser would give speeches based on their side of the story. The individual with the best argument would determine the outcome of the case.

At the end of this specialism, you should be able to: Identify the key features of good forensic technique; Apply IDEALS to the analysis of crime scene evidence and draw conclusions about the reliability and accuracy of crime scene evidence. Work in GCSE and A-Level way.

Why do the officers, who are first on the scene, cordon off the area with tape? What type of evidence might be collected from a crime scene? - starter activity Why is it important to record an accurate picture of the crime scene? - spiral walkthrough and photos What is the importance of not breaking the ‘chain of custody’ with evidence?

Read the statements below: On CSI, the investigators go to the crime scene and collect the evidence. They then go back to the lab and analyse the evidence. They then interview the suspect and show them the evidence. They then go back to the crime scene and collect more evidence. They analyse that. On crime shows, the CSIs are able to complete all types of specialist analysis of evidence e.g blood stains, paint chips, fibres and DNA. On television crime shows, every forensic laboratory is fully equipped with everything needed to solve a crime. Modern technology makes the analysis of trace evidence fast and simple.

IDENTIFY What is this?

DESCRIBE Describe what you see

EXPLAIN Explain which shot was fired first by looking at the cracks in the glass...

ANALYSE Look at the data and identify any pattern. Explain the pattern. Height blood dropped from (m) Diameter of 1cm 3 blood droplet (mm) Shape of blood droplet 0.120Smooth edge 0.225Smooth edge 0.331Slight jagged 0.438Slight jagged 0.544Jagged 0.651Jagged 0.758Jagged + spotting

APPLY A blood drop from a crime scene is 73 mm in diameter. How far did it fall from and where on the body is it likely to come from? Height blood dropped from (m) Diameter of 1cm 3 blood droplet (mm) Shape of blood droplet 0.120Smooth edge 0.225Smooth edge 0.331Slight jagged 0.438Slight jagged 0.544Jagged 0.651Jagged 0.758Jagged + spotting

LINK What science technique links the following?

Individual Characteristics. –A piece of evidence that is unique and can be identified to the exclusion of all others. –Fingerprints –DNA Class Characteristics –Features shared by all members of a group or class –Footprints

SYNTHESISE Create an A-Z list of types of evidence that you would find at a crime scene or connected with a crime

Yesterday I saw two forensic scientists, friends of mine, in Leicester City Centre with a little boy. The little boy was the son of one of the forensic scientists, but neither of the scientists was the father of the little boy. How could this be?
