1 ADVANCED LEVEL SPORT STUDIES AN INTRODUCTION

2 WHY? Success at GCSE. Be very careful here – its 60% practical! Success at GCSE. Be very careful here – its 60% practical! You need: You need: - a good theory mark at GCSE (about 70%) - Double Science at C or above - English and Maths at C or above Interested in a sport-related career? E.g. coach, performer, PE teacher, leisure industry… Interested in a sport-related career? 3 WHERE? All theory lessons are taught in G2. Most practical lessons are taught in the new sports hall. We do have some trips to Hartpury College, UWE and University of Bath sport science labs.

4 WHO? Mr. Underwood will teach part of Unit 1 (Anatomy and Physiology) Mr. Spacey will teach part of Unit 1 (Skill Acquisition) Mr. Truan will teach part of Unit 1 (History and Social) Mr. Spacey and Mr. Underwood will teach Unit 2 – the practical element taught through theory.

5 WHEN?  You will have 9 x 1hour theory lessons per fortnight.  Two of these will be based on practical activity (for the majority of time)  Wednesday afternoons will be used to assess your PERFORMANCE practical (i.e your best sport)

6 WHAT? MOST IMPORTANTLY, THERE IS A MASSIVE JUMP BETWEEN GCSE AND AS THEORY LEVEL. At AS, you study three main areas: Anatomy and Physiology Skill Acquisition Historical and Social Aspects Look at the handout to see what content is covered.

9 ASSESSMENT At AS Level: Unit 1 (PHED 1) 60 % of AS 2 hour written exam 2 sections: 1. S ection A: 6 structured questions 2. S ection B: 1 question on applying thory to practical situations

10 UNIT 2 40 % of AS Level Internal assessment with external moderation Perform, analyse and evaluate core skills in isolation and in structured practice in 2 roles

11 SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT…  Lots of students drop out after 4 – 6 weeks.  Main reason = unexpected ‘jump’ in demand of course from GCSE to Advanced Level study.  People enjoy studying the subject.  It’s hard work.  Lots of organisation  The new syllabus gives lots more opportunity for practical.  Opportunities for coaching qualifications / work experience
