4 Federal Aviation Administration Flight Standards SMS Effort 4 SMS Voluntary Implementation: SMS Pilot Project Pilot Project activities commenced in 2007 Voluntary SMS development AFS combined effort Objectives are to Develop: –Implementation strategies, –Oversight interfaces, and –Gain experience for FAA and Service Providers

5 Federal Aviation Administration Flight Standards SMS Effort 5 SMS Voluntary Implementation: SMS Pilot Project Current Numbers 90%+ of Current 121 Air Carriers 81 - 135 Air Carriers 11 - 145 Repair Stations 4 - 141 Flight Schools

6 Federal Aviation Administration Flight Standards SMS Effort 6 SMS Pilot Project Transition Part 5 will end SMSPP for part 121 certificate holders but will continue for 135, 145, 141, and others meeting entry criteria SMSPP guidance material will be updated to Part 5 Part 121s in SMSPP will revise their implementation plans and submit to FAA for part 5 approval SMSPP Levels will no longer be mandatory but may be used as milestones within existing or future implementation plans SMSPO will provide bridging guidance and ongoing support to certificate holders, CMTs and CMOs
