Life of Karl Weierstrass ● Was born in Ostenfelde,part of Ennigerloh, Province of Westphalia(1815) ● Was a Gymnasium student at Theodorianum in Paderborn ● Studies were to be in the fields of law, economics, and finance, he was immediately in conflict with his hopes to study mathematics ● Pursued private classes in mathematics ● Left the university without a degree ● Honours: Fellow of the Royal Society,Royal Society Copley Medal

Career ● Pursued mathematics at the University of Münster and his father was quite convinced that he admitted him in a training school in Münster. ● During his period of study that he came across the lectures of Christoph Gudermann and the elliptic functions ● In 1848 he joined as a lecturer at the Lyceum Hosianum in Braunsberg. ● Gave classes on physics, gymnastics, geography, history, German, calligraphy and botanics.

Weierstrass And Calculus ● Was interested in calculus of variants, in which he made significant achievements ● Reformed the calculus of variants theory, which gave way to the modern day calculus of variations ● Established a necessary condition for a strong extrema of variational problems to exist.

6. Weierstrass M-test ● Weierstrass M-test is a test for showing that an infinite series of functions converges uniformly

Students of Karl Weierstrass ● Edmund Husserl (was a philosopher and mathematician and the founder of the 20th century philosophical school of phenomenology) ● Sofia Kovalevskaya (was the first major Russian female mathematician) ● Gösta Mittag-Leffler (his mathematical contributions are connected chiefly with the theory of functions) ● Hermann Schwarz (known for his work in complex analysis)

8. Later Years and Death ● Constantly suffered from severe dizziness. He encountered dizziness attacks frequently for 12 years. ● Was able to publish papers that brought him fame and distinction ● Took a chair at the Technical University of Berlin ● Was immobile for the last three years ● Died in Berlin from pneumonia
