Canadians Storm Juno Beach D-DAY INVASION
2
D-DAY (DAY OF DELIVERANCE) The beaches of Northern France were selected as the site of the D-Day invasion These beaches had become a stronghold of Nazi forces and were heavily reinforced with weaponry, pill boxes, barbed wire and mines both in the water and on the beach Strategically they were very important for both the Allies (us) and the German forces If we could defeat the Germans in Normandy we could begin to push them out of France and back into Germany.
3
WHAT HAPPENED? The beaches of Normandy were divided among the different allied countries who were involved in the invasion and given names. Canada was responsible for taking and holding Juno beach
4
On June 6, 1944, the invasion began It was a 3 phase assault on the German forces Phase 1: Air Assault Aircraft in the early morning began bombing the German defences and paratroopers were dropped behind enemy lines in France
5
Phase 2: Naval Assault More then 7000 ships had to clear lanes through minefields in the water and bombard German positions They also had to deliver the troops to the beaches and all of the equipment needed for the battle once they reached the beach
6
Phase 3: Land Forces The main objective was for forces to land on the beach and secure their position and move on the German forces and take their beach The only Allied force that was successful on the first day of battle was….THE CANADIANS
9
WHY IS THIS SO SIGNIFICANT? We were the only forces to achieve our objective on the first day The beach had been taken from the German stronghold We were able to start moving into France and take it back from the Germans Hitler was now facing a war on two fronts and this was the beginning of the end of the war
