HQ01e CERN test preparation update CERN Team: H. Bajas, M. Bajko, A. Chiuchiolo, G. Deferne, O. Dunkle, J. Feuvrier, P. Ferracin, L. Fiscarelli, F. Flamand, C. Giulox, M. Ky, S. Russenschuck, E. Todeso, P. Viret, and others. and the LARP team

Overview Magnet preparation – Rotating coil – Instrumentation/connector – Current lead extension – Magnet status Test plan is under preparation Schedule Plone folder for more information about the CERN test: https://plone.uslarp.org/MagnetRD/ModelMagnets/HQ/ HQtestCERN/ 2/16/2012HQ01e CERN test status2

Work bench 2/16/2012HQ01e CERN test status3

90 mm diameter rotating probe – Quench attenne and G10 circular strain relief boards were removed from the bore Helium turbulence due to a quench and limited space. – two layers of G10 sheets wrapped around the aperture to protect the wiring – Holes along the G10 tube Rotating probe 2/16/2012HQ01e CERN test status4

Instrumentation connectors 2/16/2012HQ01e CERN test status XRWang@lbl.gov 5 After the rotating probe’s installation, magnet stood up. Probe centering completed. Connectors for CERN header made.

Issue – Negative lead too short – Positive lead too long Extend the negative lead with a pair of LHC dipole cable – 13 kA/cable nominal capacity; 22 kA quench observed at CERN – Detailed parameters requested – HQ short sample 20 kA @ 1.9 K NbTi lead extension 2/16/2012HQ01e CERN test status6

NbTi extension Splice configuration 2/16/2012HQ01e CERN test status7 HQ NbTi LHC NbTi Ag96Sn4 solder Coil 7 lead Heating stationContact length: 15 cm, ~ 1.5 pitch length; Will be monitored by a pair of V-taps

Magnet instrumentation status No new open taps checked at the magnet connector Hipot results show little degradation – Protection heater vs. coil, see H. Bajas’s presentation on plone (meeting Feb 9, 2012) – Not identical test procedure/method Resistance between endshoes – Coil 8 return end: 6.18 kOhm – Coil 5 lead end: 0.8 Ohm – No short between endshoe and coils Strain gauge readings consistent with those before shipping. 2/16/2012HQ01e CERN test status8

Plan and schedule Test plan under preparation – Power test and magnetic measurement under discussion/update within the CERN team – Will be distributed for discussion Remaining tasks – Signal check and wiring cleanup; – Insulation around the NbTi leads; – Attach HQ to the header; – Wiring to the test facility and electrical check; – Warm magnetic measurement; – … Tentative Schedule – Cooldown in the week of 2/20/2012 (will take > ~ 36 hours) 2/16/2012HQ01e CERN test status9
