After the death of John the Baptist, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee. A great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.

Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.

He welcomed the people and spoke to them about the kingdom of God. He healed all those who needed healing.

Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the nearby villages and find food, because there is nothing to eat here.”

But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They answered, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to spend that much on bread for them to eat?”

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” “Bring them here to me,” Jesus said.

But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” The disciples did so, and everyone sat down.

Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.

Then he gave them to the disciples to pass out to the people.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”

The disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand, besides women and children.

After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Bible Verse Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Luke 12:32
