2 BUSINESS ETHICS A socially responsible business engages in ethical business practices Ethics are principles of morality or rules of conduct Business Ethics are rules about how business and their employees ought to behave Ethical behavior involves conforming to these rules. Unethical behavior violates them Code of ethics can help a business identify proper employee behavior.

3 CODE OF ETHICS Set of rules for guiding the actions of employees or members of an organization Example: Cardinal Code Address topics such as Confidentiality Should be a guide for all employees or members of organization Must be worded in terms of acceptable behavior rather than forbidden action Even with a Code of Ethics, the choice of proper behavior can cause dilemmas for decision makers

4 ETHICAL CONDUCT GUIDELINES The ethical conduct of a business is greatly determined by its top management. They set the stage Executive who shows strong moral character and make ethical business decisions set the ethical standards for a business Example: Coaching is like top management. If you coach is telling you or allowing you to do things that aren’t “right” then you will follow with their example. Companies set up programs that promote ethical behavior in their employees. Programs include topics such as making personal phone calls, taking supplies from work, or how to make ethical decisions on the job.

5 GUIDELINES FOR WRITING A CODE OF ETHICS Determine the purpose of the code Tailor the code to the needs and values of the organization Consider involving employees from all levels of the company in writing the code Determine the rules or principles that all members of the organization will be expected to adhere to Include information about how the code will be enforced Determine how the code will be implemented and where it will be published or posted Determine how and when the code will be reviewed and revised.

6 GUIDELINES FOR ETHICAL DECISIONS 1.Is this action legal? 2.Does the action violate professional or company standards? 3.Who is affected by the action and how? Example: My husband worked for a car repair shop for a short time that was having them tell customers things that they didn’t need on their cars. He had to choose between doing the job the way that they wanted or being ethical. He chose being ethical and left the company shortly after that started.

7 ETHICAL DECISION MAKING A common concern in ethical decision making involves conflict of Interest Conflict of Interest occurs when an action by a company or individual results in an unfair benefit. Example: A company’s board member pressured the company to buy items only from a business that a board member owns or controls.

8 PROFESSIONAL CODE OF CONDUCT Other professionals will also have to adhere a professional code of conduct Professionals that deal with the public Teachers, Accountants, Doctors, Engineers, Sales, Etc Usually established by their professional association Continue education on professional conduct

9 ASSIGNMENT Try to find a companies code of ethics as an example. Read over the code of ethics Summarize the Code of Ethics and explain the benefits of this code of ethics for the organization.
