Review your notes on fracking…. Did you write down the essay questions??

1. What do you think? Has fracking changed our energy future for the better, or for the worse? In you answer, include the following. a. Define fracking- what is it used for? b. Include 2 benefits (describe and use examples) c. Include 2 disadvantages to fracking (describe and use examples) d. Explain your position on fracking. Do you think it should be used to extract oil or do you think it should not be used? Explain and support your reasoning using information from the article.

Why is society so much more reliant on fossil fuels than they were 150 years ago?

Write the following definitions in your CB. Fossil Fuel List 3 examples of Fossil Fuels Potential Energy Kinetic Energy Chemical Energy Thermal Energy Exothermic Endothermic

Draw the Lewis Structures for the reactants and products. What happens in terms of energy when this reaction takes place?

Ask me about catalysts

Breaking bonds takes energy. Endothermic process.

Energy is released when products form. Forming products is an exothermic process.

The overall change in heat is the enthalpy. Δ H = H products – H reactants

We write the energy into the balanced equation.

The heat of combustion- the energy released when 1 g of the hydrocarbon burns. Molar Heat of combustion- the energy released when 1 mole of the substance burns. (this is what you would write in the equation!)

1. How much energy is produced when 5.0 g of methane combusts? 2. How much energy is produced when 10.0 g of propane combusts? Use the heats of combustion!!

1. How much energy is produced when 3.6 mol of methane combusts? 2. How much energy is produced when 3.6 mol of propane combusts? Use the heats of combustion!!
