1 The 1950s: A Decade of Intensive Forest Management on the Domain Department of Forestry & Geology, Sewanee: The University of the South Jase Brooks and Nicole Nunley Introduction: This study consisted of a combination of the use of GIS and the dissection of historical harvest contracts on the Domain throughout the 1950s. All of these harvests were documented but there has never been a complete collection of these harvests and their locations until now. Unveiling this historical information will allow students, professors, and Domain managers to have a condensed and summarized visual analysis of forest management from the 1950s. Methods: To begin this project, files and contracts were located through campus achieves to help summarize what harvests occurred in the 1950s. After all of the historical harvest contracts were collected we categorized them into harvest year and by company. Luckily, each contract dealt with during this study contained the harvesters name or company, the species removed, as well as a precise description of where on the Domain the harvest took place. Each contract was dissected to help pinpoint where on the Domain each harvest occurred. Taking the information given through the contract was mapped on physical maps by using landmarks described. Once these landmarks were located measuring and drawing began to take place. When all of the harvest and contracts from the 1950s were interpreted and drawn out, they were then transferred to ArcMap shapefiles (Figure 1). The locations described in the contracts were located and drawn out depicting labeled compartments with the different colors representing the different tree species harvested (Figures 2- 8). As a finishing touch and for future uses of this project, there is a hyperlink connected showing the original contract to each polygon. Discussion Relative to the amount of acreage currently harvested on the Domain, the 1950s were a busy time for forest management. The main species harvest throughout this 10 year span consisted mainly of white oak (Quercus alba), ash (Fraxinus spp.), and gum (Nyssa sylvatica). If and when this project is recreated or looked at as a model for future studies; I have a couple things that I recommend to make the experience more enjoyable and organized. Identify and categorize each contract by company and or individual Categorized each harvest by year and species type Label & draw out harvests on a physical map before transferring to ArcMap Create tree species color codes Creating uniformity throughout study making it easier to interpret later Conclusion As management and studies throughout the Domain occur annually, it is very important to keep sound records or each and every harvest that takes place. This project is a testament towards the value of sound records and having documentation that spell out where the harvest took place but also the species and volumes removed. Organizing past contracts and creating a uniform template would be the most desirable way to handle future record keeping for harvests. This study has not only benefited me as a student but also the University, by creating imagery that can be used for future independent studies, research, and management. GIS is becoming a skill set that is a necessity in the work force today and having an opportunity to work on projects and sharpen my skill set, sets me and future students up for success. Acknowledgements I would like to thank Dr. Ken Smith for giving me the opportunity, to perform this study and leading me throughout the process. Nicole Nunley for assisting me every step of the way with the GIS maps and research. I really appreciate the both of you and all the help you where throughout this entire study.
