10 A. Gulf of Tonkin Incident July 1964 – LBJ approved covert attacks on N. Vietnam coast Aug. 2, 1964 - North Vietnamese retaliated by attacking the U.S.S. Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin Aug. 4, 1964 – supposedly another attack occurred However, the second attack turned out to be fake - never happened

11 B. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution President Johnson asked Congress to pass Gulf of Tonkin Resolution This gave him authorization to use military force in Vietnam and send more troops This was NOT a declaration of war The U.S. never officially declared war on Vietnam

16 IV. LBJ Sends Troops By 1965 LBJ and his advisors decided in increase the number of troops in Vietnam Most troops were sent to South Vietnam to fight against the Viet Cong (N.V. soldiers fighting against the corrupt U.S. backed gov. in S.V.) The War quickly became an American conflict

17 V. A Different Kind of War A. Guerilla Warfare –Hit and run attacks by small, mobile groups of soldiers –Many of the Vietnamese were farmers by day, guerilla soldiers by night (hard to identify the enemy)

24 E. The Pentagon Papers Former Dept of Defense official Daniel Ellsberg leaked top secret documents on Vietnam to NY Times Showed how Gov. had deceived public and Congress about Vietnam

25 VII. Results By 1968 – 60% of Americans disapprove of war Nixon elected in 1968 – promised to withdraw troops – Vietnamization By 1973 – last troops have returned Vietnam became united under Communist rule Vietnam is still Communist today
