25 March 2014

 Remember that this is a professional communication.  Use full sentences (not run-ons or fragments).  Make sure your spelling/grammar/punctuation /capitalization are correct.  Be sure that you have an appropriate tone.  Use an opening and closing phrase. I recommend Dear Ms. Bistline: and Sincerely, Suzy Student  Allow 24-48 hours for response time.

 I am leaving for a conference in Baltimore on Wednesday.  Your guest instructor will be the lovely Ms. Monica Montelongo.  PhD student (like me)  Film, LSJE, and Latino(a) focus in the 20 th /21 st century  I will be available via email, but only intermittently, until Monday (when I will be back on campus for my office hours).

 Everyone should have a slip with their midterm grades on it.  The fraction at the end of the line is your points/total possible points  Some will be 43. Some will be 48.  The number under that is your percentage.  Something went wrong somewhere, but it was in your favor, so I left it alone.

 Please hold specific questions for office hours.  Average is a little lower than I’d like—my thoughts:  Replacement assignment for the summary and explanation of a source.  Write the SAME assignment for a source for your final paper.  Those who did it the first time can do it again for extra points (you will get the total of both, even if it is over five), or you can skip that assignment.  Remember the UWC deal.

 Summary of source due 4/17  Draft due 4/22  Peer Review 5/6  Final due 5/9 (final exam period)

 Focus on adaptation  Write about:  The Turn of the Screw/Maybe This Time  The Haunting of Hill House/The Haunting  “The Tell Tale Heart”/ The Tell Tale Heart  Draft of 1000 words with one source  Final with 1500 words and TWO sources

 For the most part, revision was clear.  I still saw MLA problems, both in formatting of the papers and citations (in-text and works cited lists).  There seemed to be confusion about appropriate sources.  If you had a note about not using a peer-reviewed source, please see me during my office hours before you turn in your next draft (or your summary of a source).

 What do we think of when we think of Native Americans?  http://youtu.be/e2bs1TTc4gk http://youtu.be/e2bs1TTc4gk  http://www.matikawilbur.com/blog/ http://www.matikawilbur.com/blog/

 What do we make of these stories as a group?  What were the ghosts?  How did the tone of these differ?  Why?  What do these hauntings represent?

 Does the story remind you of any other familiar stories?  Who is the ghost here?  Is it really a haunting? Why or why not?  What is the significance of the story?

 Here we have a more familiar haunting.  What do we learn about the ghost?  How does the haunting work?  What is the laying of the ghost?

 Where is the ghost here?  What purpose does the ghost serve?  Do we see it representing something?  How do we understand the boy and his uncle?  What do we make of the ending?  Has the haunting been overcome?  What is happening with the old man?
