7 th Grade Mathematics Colleen Harger

The ability to think creatively to solve problems in real time. Define the problem Design an appropriate solution Applying the solution Evaluate the process and the outcome

Students are proposed with the following problem: Given the dimensions of room on a blueprint and its scale, how many gallons of paint would you need to buy to cover the walls with 2 coats? Student the follow the 4D’s to complete the problem. They will need to decide what the problem is asking them to do. Design how they are gong to solve the problem, get the necessary information to solve the problem, and solve it. Evaluate the solution.

The ability to access digital information sources to retrieve the desired information. The ability to effectively evaluate the information, assess the significance of the information, and assess the accuracy of the data.

Students get a budget. They have to plan a road trip, write an itinerary, and create a spreadsheet of expenses. Students use the internet to research hotels, plan gas and mileage, meals, and entertainment. Students create a presentation to share their plans for their Road Trip with the class.

The process by which artistic proficiency adds meaning through design, art, and storytelling.

Students choose a Math term. Then they choose a way to show the definition of the term. Students are encouraged to be creative with the assignment. Examples of things they could do: They can make a poster, create a cartoon, make a little storybook, a video, or a 3-D object.

Teamwork Work cooperatively with virtual and real partners in an online environment to create original digital products.

Two math classrooms at 2 different schools are proposed with the same problem. Some information is given to the students in the 1 st school and some different information is given to the students in the 2 nd school. Students communicate between schools through Skype, text messaging, e-mail, and social networks to put their information together, come up with a plan to solve the problem, and solve the problem together.

Interpret the real message Create and Publish original digital products

Students research a famous mathematician. They then create a short presentation using Photo Story or Animoto. There should be enough information and examples of their work to let the rest of the class learned about the Mathematician and what important contributions they made to the Math world. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/list-of-famous- mathematicians-and-their-contributions.html

Personal Responsibility Leadership Ethics Accountability Fiscal Responsibility Environmental Awareness Global Citizenship

A math question or problem is proposed on the class Moodle discussion or a blog. Students will be require to go over their ideas of how to solve the problem or their opinion on the math question. Students will also be required to respond to other classmates’ posts. Students practice being school appropriate and responding positively to other’s posts and ideas.
