2 At 2:35 p.m. on November 22, 1963, about 90 minutes after JFK was pronounced dead, Lyndon Baines Johnson stood inside Air Force One on an airstrip in Dallas. According to the Constitution, LBJ had immediately became the thirty-sixth President from the moment of Kennedy’s death. LBJ insisted on taking the oath before leaving Dallas

5 Johnson Takes the Reigns Shared same goals as Kennedy of an activist government Many New Frontier programs will become part of LBJ’s agenda The elimination of poverty was his major goal

6 Building Confidence Summer 1964—LBJ worked within Congress to find consensus or general agreement Began “The Great Society” initiatives  heavy gov’t involvement Poverty relief, education aid, healthcare, voting rights, conservation and beautification projects, urban renewal, and economic development in depressed areas Between 1963-1966, LBJ had more programs passed than any president since FDR

7 Election of 1964 LBJ (Dem) defeated Barry Goldwater (Rep) by a landslide Democrats won both control of Congress LBJ given major approval by Americans to continue his Great Society program
