HEP Status

HEP: Vital Stats Theory: 6.8 faculty – Allen, Dutta, Nanopoulos (phenomenology); K. Becker, M. Becker, Pope, Sezgin (string/supergravity), Strigari (cosmology) Experiment: 8 faculty members – Eusebi, Kamon, Safonov, Ulmer(collider); Mahapatra, Toback, Webb (dark matter); McIntyre (accelerator R&D) Infrastructure – Detector/electronics/accelerator R&D labs – Part of Mitchell Institute Generous endowments (e.g., 4 chairs, $20M) – 15 supported RAs, ~12 postdocs, 1 research professor, ~5 engineers/technicians Past/future hires/retirements: – Lost White and Arnowitt – 2 recent faculty additions (Strigari, Ulmer), no active faculty searches – Expect likely 1 retirement in HEP-th and ~2 retirements in HEP- exp in the next 7-10 years – Mitchell director search still ongoing

HEP Theory: Performance Notes Strong overall performance: – Well on par with the “target” group – Comparable external funding levels NSF & DOE – Very strong publication and citation record Notably lower rate of APS Fellowships and awards: – Appears to be at least partly related to faculty not seeing these as important – Likely reduces visibility in the community

HEP Exp: Performance Notes Compares well with the “target” group – Similar external funding Significant project funding not included in NSF/DOE data, increasing per PI share – E.g. CMS brings ~$400k per year, CDMS just got ramped up to a base of $600k per year (about doubles that in the data report), Qatar funds of ~$150k – Publications not included as metrics: difficult to correctly count large collaboration papers DOE funding model is designed to correctly take “insiders information” into account – Good success rate with career awards, but low rate of APS Fellowships Likely reduces visibility in the community Interdisciplinary connections: – CDMS dark matter group has active collaboration with engineering and now with the CM group

HEP Theory Development Scenarios Maintain strong string/gravity effort (4) Create critical mass in theoretical cosmology effort: – Emerging hot research area, important as a bridge to maintain competitiveness in the field in the future – Strengthens synergy with HEP-Exp and ASTRO – Proposal of 2 new faculty positions to reach critical mass in cosmology (with Strigari + flexibility of other existing faculty) Focus on increasing visibility – Pro-active nominations (APS fellowships …) – Increase in group size – Mitchell Institute Director search

HEP Exp Development Scenarios Hiring Priorities: – Maintain critical mass of 4 faculty in collider physics – Dark matter: early replacement of Webb to maintain presence in LZ experiment – Accelerator R&D (McIntyre’s replacement) Maintaining the single-PI operation requires exceptional successor; critical mass? – Emerging US HEP priority in neutrino physics Will become the largest US-based HEP program ($1B+ facility to be built at Fermilab) Launch program with new hire (+partial participation of other PIs) – New projects will allow maintaining long term strength of CMS and CDMS R&D enterprises and significant project funding they generate Quick increase in visibility could come with a high-profile hire (MI director?)

MRPC-HEP Meeting Notes Productive theo + exp programs with thrusts in string/gravity, pheno + collider, dark matter Theory program could benefit from higher visibility, stronger thrust in theoretical cosmology (2 new faculty) Enhance in-house theory-exp synergy Mitchell director search a priority Future exp. program: new efforts (new n fac) vs. critical mass
