Disciples Are Made Not Born (Part 6 of 6) The Training of a Disciple Acts 16:1-5; 2 Timothy 3:10-17; 1 Corinthians 4:14-21

3 Parts of the training process

Acts 16:1-5 (ESV) 1 Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. 2 He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Acts 16:1-5 (ESV) 4 As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. 5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily.

1) Finding a Disciple to Train A) Be obediently MINISTERING (vs 1a) B) Be LOOKING (vs 1b & 2) C) Be BLIND (vs 1c) D) Be COMMITTED (vs 3-5)

2 Timothy 3:10-17 (ESV) 10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

2 Timothy 3:10-17 (ESV) 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom[a] you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:10-17 (ESV) 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God[b] may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2) Training a Disciple A) Be an observable EXAMPLE (vs 10) B) Be truthful about the TRUTH (vs 11-12) C) ENCOURAGE them (vs 14-15) D) Teach to equip for SERVICE (vs 16-17)

1 Corinthians 4:14-21 (ESV) 14 I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. 15 For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 16 I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

1 Corinthians 4:14-21 (ESV) 17 That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church. 18 Some are arrogant, as though I were not coming to you. 19 But I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people but their power. 20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power.

1 Corinthians 4:14-21 (ESV) 21 What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

3) Following through with Discipleship A) Lovingly admonish them in their MISTAKES (vs 14) B) ENCOURAGE them (vs 15) C) CONTINUE to teach them (vs 16-17) D) Be PRESENT as much as you can (vs 18-21)
