Virus Kingdom By: Kyle Sargis and Marc Buckland

Introduction Not considered living Don’t carry out any living functions Scientists have identified thousands of different viruses

Structure Inner nucleic acid core filled with genetic material (RNA or DNA) Outer coat of protein called capsid Larger viruses have layer outside capsid called envelope Are shaped differently and how they are shaped determines if cell can be affected

Feeding Viruses don’t feed or convert energy because their non living React with cells to make more viruses

Reproduction Can’t reproduce They replicate themselves –They attach themselves to a host cell –They inject DNA into the cell –Viral DNA controls the cell –Virus tells the cell to create more viruses –They repeat process on more cells The virus “hijacks the cell”

Types of Viruses E. coli T4 virus Smallpox Envelope virus Wart polyhedral virus Irregular shaped virus Helical flu virus Icosahedral Adenovirus

Summary Viruses are not considered living There are more than a thousand types of viruses Can’t reproduce-they replicate cells into many other viruses Viruses don’t feed or convert energy A single drop of blood can have six billion viruses contained in it Despite their size, viruses can be complex structures

Dangerous Viruses AIDS Virus attacking white blood cells Polio Virus Hepatitis Virus Rabies Virus
