2 Service Learning - is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience teach civic responsibility and strengthen community Servant Leadership - is a philosophy and practice of leadership coined and defined by Robert Greenleaf. It is the catalyst for mission excellence in academic programs

3 Glenwood High School - Students have orientation in Spanish for their work at the largest turtle nesting beach in the world (Ostional, Costa Rica) - 5 year program that graduated 25 leaders for environmental conservation

4 LEARNING  Trash pick up  Tutoring  Outreach  Habitat for Humanity  Disaster Relief donations LEADING  Ongoing projects with a mission  Students create the projects  Projects are integrated with academic curriculum

5  Survey Students  Survey Teachers  Become Familiar with your church mission projects  Know the volunteer policies and projects of your school  Connect the dream to an academic curriculum  Find other schools who can mentor your program  Study successful charities, analyze them and know why they are successful at meeting their missions

6 SERVANTS  Volunteer  Help others  Protect the Environment  Feed the Homeless  Collect donations for disaster relief SERVERS  Notice the problems  Create solutions to the problems  Develop life skills that make them useful to the community and to God’s people  Learn to serve God through action

9  FOOD SECURITY & NUTRITION IN BRAZIL  TURTLE RESEARCH ON ISLA COIBA, PANAMA  SOLAR POWERED WELLS IN MALI  SOLAR STOVES FOR INDIGENOUS FAMILIES IN GUATEMALA

10  IDENTIFY PROJECTS IN THE COMMUNITY..GLOBAL OR LOCAL  ESTABLISH A PARTNERSHIP WITH ACADEMIC TEACHERS.  WRITE A CURRICULUM THAT CORRELATES THE PROJECT WITH THE ACADEMIC AREA  OFFER THE COURSE AS AN ELECTIVE WITH CRITERIA FOR STUDENT SELECTION  USE A CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY PROGRAM AS A GUIDE (SETON HALL HAS A GREAT PROGRAM)

11  WE ALREADY DO THAT “ATTITUDE”  POLICIES THAT LIMIT TRAVEL  FEAR OF LIABILITY ISSUES  APATHY  THINKING TOO SMALL  POOR PLANNING
