3 Defining Hurricane According to the national Hurricane Center, the word Hurricane comes from the name “Hurican” the Caribbean god of evil. They are tropical meaning that they are generated in tropical areas of the ocean near the equator. They are cyclonic meaning that their winds swirl around a central eye. They are low-pressure system. The eye of an hurricane is always low- pressure.

4 How Hurricanes form 1.Tropical depression-swirling clouds and rain with wind speed of less than 38mph. 2.Tropical storm-wind speed of 39 to 73 mph. 3.Hurricane-wind speeds greater than 74 mph. It takes hours maybe even day for a thunderstorm to form in to a hurricane. 4.Characterized by converging winds at the surface and strong uniform-speed winds at higher altitudes.

5 What a hurricane is made of! Eye-The low-pressure, calm center of circulation. Eye wall-area around the eye with the fastest, most violent winds. Rain bands-bands of thunderstorms circulating outward form the eye that are parts of the evaporation/condensation cycle that feeds the storm.
