 Written by English nobles in 1215.  King John II of England forced to sign it.  Guaranteed free people could not be arrested, imprisoned, or exiled without a trial by jury  Guaranteed English citizens could only be judged by English law (meaning the king couldn’t just decide you needed to die)  The Magna Carta’s guarantees are reflected today in the 5 th and 6 th amendments to the United States Constitution. THE MAGNA CARTA

 In 1689, England’s Parliament strengthened the rights of the Magna Carta with the English Bill of Rights.  Prevented taxation without representation  Prevented cruel and unusual punishments (just like our 8 th amendment does today)  Protected the right to bear arms (just like our 2 nd amendment does today)  Protected freedom of speech (for law makers) (sort of like our 1 st amendment today) THE ENGLISH BILL OF RIGHTS

 When they arrived at Cape Cod, the Puritans wrote the Mayflower Compact (named after their boat).  Instead of having someone hand-picked by the king, the Puritans reserved the right to choose their own leaders and make their own laws.  This document was the first example in the English colonies of self-government.  The Puritans are NOT linked to freedom of religion. They left England because they couldn’t convince enough people their way was right. So, in the Puritan’s colony, you HAD TO worship their way. MAYFLOWER COMPACT

COMMON SENSE
