16.  When they arrived at Cape Cod, the Puritans wrote the Mayflower Compact (named after their boat).  Instead of having someone hand-picked by the king, the Puritans reserved the right to choose their own leaders and make their own laws.  This document was the first example in the English colonies of self-government.  The Puritans are NOT linked to freedom of religion. They left England because they couldn’t convince enough people their way was right. So, in the Puritan’s colony, you HAD TO worship their way. MAYFLOWER COMPACT

19.  Published by Thomas Paine in early 1776  46 page pamphlet written in common language (instead of fancy talk)  Adjusted for population, this pamphlet was as popular as the Hunger Games is today.  Even though the fighting of the American Revolution had started, most people thought that after the war, everyone would peacefully go back to being English citizens.  Thomas Paine’s pamphlet suggested breaking with England as the necessary result of the war.
