4 Part I: Knowers and Knowing 1.The problem of knowledge – This chapter explains who knowledge is not perfect. It is uncertain. There are many strange beliefs that exist. In this chapter we attempt to simply recognize this truth. 2.The nature of knowledge – We give a real definition to the word “knowledge.” – We talk about the “levels of knowledge.” – Finally we discuss knowledge that we receive from other sources.

5 Part II: Ways of Knowing 3.Language Language is a primary way of getting information. Language has many problems as a way of getting knowledge. 4. Perception Awareness of things through the 5 senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. These senses are imperfect

6 Part II: Ways of Knowing (continued) 5.Reason Using our “mind sense” really Gives very reliable information Does have problems also (fallacy) 6. Emotion Traditionally they have been an obstacle to knowledge Are they sometimes an important guide to truth?

7 Part III: Areas of Knowledge 7.Mathematics – The search for patterns – Seems very true and certain 8. The Natural Sciences – Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Astronomy, Cosmology, Geology, etc. – Looking for truth within nature – Science is not God and should be treated with caution

8 Part III: Areas of Knowledge (continued) 9. The Human Sciences – Psychology, sociology, economics, anthropology, human geography etc. – Based on observation, how reliable? 10. History – The study of what happened – Who writes it? How reliable is memory?

9 Part III: Areas of Knowledge (continued 2) 11. The Arts – Art, dance, drawing, singing, dancing, theatre, film, entertainment, etc. – What do we know to be true, justified, and believable? 12. Ethics – The study of how we should behave (morals and values) – What can we say is real and true in the study of ethics?

10 Part III: Areas of Knowledge (continued 2) 13. Religion What’s the purpose for life? What can we “know” is true as a justified, true, belief? Many cultures designed around religious beliefs.
