The Participle A participle is a verb form that can be used as an adjective. Think: The verb looks like a verb but it is acting as an adjective. Ex. Waxed floors can be dangerously slippery. Ex. Darting suddenly, the cat escaped through the door.

The Participle Present participles are the ing verbs. They act as verbs when they are a part of verb phrase. They are not used to stand alone as verbs. ex. The rain was pouring. The coach had been watching the clock.

Past Participle Past participles are the –ed or end in d verbs. Other verbs are irregularly formed. Similar to present participles, when part of a verb phrase it acts as a verb, not an adjective. ex. She was told that tickets were available.
