10. The impressionists were a group of artists working in France in the mid C19th. They included Monet, Degas, Morisot, Sisley, Pissarro and Renoir. They were inspired by scientific discoveries about how the eye sees colour. They were interested in capturing a fleeting moment of time in their paintings. They painted in small touches of pure colour which joined to make the required hue only when the spectator stood at a certain distance from the canvas.
