Sport And Urban Regeneration

The Commonwealth Games; 2002 In 1995, Manchester was awarded the 2002 Commonwealth Games. It also made an unsuccessful bid for the 2000 Olympic Games. Despite losing the Olympic bid, Manchester has benefitted form the construction of new facilities and an improved infrastructure such as Greater Manchester’s Motorway Box; the equivalent of the M25 around London was completed in 1997.

The Commonwealth Games; 2002 Its tram network has been extended to the stadium site, and road approaches spiral into the stadium parking area, making parking relatively easy. The Central theme of Manchester’s approach has been urban regeneration. The East Side of Manchester has not enjoyed the same economic buoyancy of the city centre or South Manchester; nor has it benefitted from major projects such as the redevelopment of Trafford Park and Salford Quays, the old Ship Canal docklands in West Manchester.

The Commonwealth Games; 2002 The stadium is located within the city’s inner ring road and is on a derelict site once contaminated by heavy engineering waste and gasworks. Since the area was decontaminated and cleaned up, there have a number of new developments such as the National Velodrome, a world-class cycling stadium, and a national indoor tennis centre.

London; 2012 One important element in bringing the Games to London was the prospect of regeneration in the East End of London. In addition to this, the Games should bring an economic boom to London and the UK as a whole. The main effect of staging the Games in 2012 will be the complete transformation of the Lower Lea Valley, the largest remaining regeneration opportunity in Inner London.

London; 2012 The area is home to one of the most deprived communities in the UK, with high unemployment. Key Olympic venues will be built there, including an 80,000 seat stadium, a world- class aquatic centre, a velodrome, and BMX track, and a three-arena sports complex. There will also be an Olympic Village to accommodate up to 17,800 athletes and officials.

London; 2012 Up to 12,000 permanent jobs will be created in the area of the Olympic Park alone, as well as thousands of temporary ones. At least 7000 jobs will be created in the construction sector. The Games should also provide a boost for the tourism industry as more than half a million visitors head to the UK. Analysts believe Olympics-generated income from tourism that year could reach 2 billion pounds.

Activity 1.Suggest reasons why a Recreation and Tourism element is often incorporated into inner-urban schemes of development. 2.What are the proposed benefits of the Olympics/World Cup coming to a country and how do these types of sports help to regenerate areas within?
