3 What is PBS? School-wide Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a different way of handling discipline, PBS is… Proactive: Trying to prevent inappropriate behaviors by putting procedures in place and if needed changing the environment. Educative: Teaching the students what we expect of them while on our campus (Expectations). Teaching our students the rules and expectations for specific settings (Cafeteria, Hall, Bus, Etc.). Reinforcement Based: Giving students rewards for when they show the schools expectations and they follow the school rules. Negative consequences are still given for inappropriate behavior. We want the consequences to change the student’s behavior so the student does not display the same behavior again.

4 What is PBS? A collaborative, assessment-based process to developing effective interventions for problem behavior Emphasizes the use of proactive, educative, and reinforcement-based strategies to achieve meaningful and durable behavior and lifestyle outcomes Aim is to build functional, effective environments in which appropriate behavior is more effective than problem behavior

8 What will PBS look like in our school? DATA is used to help track progress and identify areas to target for intervention. Discipline referral PROCESS & PROCEDURES are CONSISTENT throughout the school. Uses school-wide EXPECTATIONS & RULES in specific settings to TEACH students appropriate behavior. REWARD SYSTEM to encourage and model appropriate behavior and EFFECTIVE CONSEQUENCES to discourage inappropriate behavior.
