CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Common Core Standards The Common Core State Standards provide a real world approach to learning and teaching. The standards require a practical, real-life application of knowledge that prepares students for success in college, work and life. o Consistent learning expectations for all students. o Clear standards that focus on understanding over memorization. o Emphasis on the important topics students need to succeed after high school.

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader How does common core support student understanding? The standards describe the skills and knowledge your children need to succeed in a rapidly changing world, including the ability to think creatively, solve real- world problems, make effective arguments, and engage in debates. These standards are creating thinkers, who can create plans to solve real life situations, and compete in the global economy.

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader What has changed in math? Old Standard Question: Each shirt costs $4. How much do 3 shirts cost? Common Core Question: Two groups of students from Douglas Elementary School were walking to the library when it began to rain. The 7 students in Mr. Stem’s group shared the 3 large umbrellas they had with Ms. Thorn’s group of 11 students. If the same number of students were under each umbrella, how many students were under each umbrella? Draw a visual model and explain your thinking in words.

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Standard Operations Vs New Way of Doing Math In the past there was only one way to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. Now, our kids have options. We introduce multiple ways to compute, and the kids can pick the method that works for them. They can actually explain why that method works. They have a deeper understanding of the concept.

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader How can the parents help? Ask your child to DO the math that comes up in your daily life Apply math in real world situations TALK about why the math works PROVE that they know why and how the math works Notice whether your child REALLY knows why the answer is what it is

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Questions and Comments “We are exploring together. We are cultivating a garden together, backs to the sun. The question is a shovel in our hands and we are digging beneath the hard and crusty surface to the rich humus of our lives.” Parker J. Palmer Parker J. Palmer
