3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 2 of 16  We will discuss the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Overview

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 3 of 16 The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) serves as the world's central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co ‑ operation in the nuclear field, IAEA and as the international inspectorate for the application of nuclear safeguards and verification measures covering civilian nuclear programmes

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 4 of 16 IAEA Headquarters Board of Governors General Conference

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 5 of 16 IAEA Profile  The IAEA was established in 1957  Its statutory objective is to seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 6 of 16 IAEA Profile  One of the IAEA*s functions is:  to establish or adopt, in consultation and, where appropriate, in collaboration with the competent organs of the United Nations and with the specialized agencies concerned, standards of safety for protection of health and minimization of danger to life and property (including such standards for labour conditions),

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 7 of 16 IAEA Profile  One of the IAEA*s functions is (cont):  to provide for the application of these standards to its own operations as well as to the operations making use of materials, services, equipment, facilities, and information made available by the Agency or at its request or under its control or supervision;  to provide for the application of these standards, at the request of the parties, to operations under any bilateral or multilateral arrangement, or at the request of a State, to any of the State*s activities in the field of atomic energy

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 8 of 16 IAEA Profile  Moreover, with respect to any IAEA project, or other arrangement where the IAEA is requested by the parties concerned to apply safeguards, the IAEA has the right and responsibility:  to require the observance of any health and safety measure prescribed by the Agency  to send into the territory of the recipient State or States inspectors... to determine whether there is compliance with [such] health and safety measures

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 9 of 16 IAEA Profile  The Standards are intended to facilitate the discharging of these functions, rights and responsibilities of the IAEA

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 10 of 16 IAEA Profile  IAEA serves as the world's foremost intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co ‑ operation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.  The Agency's broad spectrum of services, programmes, and activities is based on the needs of its 134 Member States

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 11 of 16

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 12 of 16 IAEA Mission Statement  The IAEA is an independent intergovernmental, science and technology ‑ based organization, in the United Nations family, that serves as the global focal point for nuclear cooperation  The IAEA assists its Member States, in the context of social and economic goals, in planning for and using nuclear science and technology for various peaceful purposes, including the generation of electricity, and facilitates the transfer of such technology and knowledge in a sustainable manner to developing Member States

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 13 of 16 IAEA Mission Statement  The IAEA develops nuclear safety standards and, based on these standards, promotes the achievement and maintenance of high levels of safety in applications of nuclear energy, as well as the protection of human health and the environment against ionizing radiation  The IAEA verifies through its inspection system that States comply with their commitments under the Non ‑ Proliferation Treaty and other non ‑ proliferation agreements, to use nuclear material and facilities only for peaceful purposes.

3/2003 Rev 1 IV.2.1 – slide 14 of 16 Basic Safety Standards  To establish basic requirements for protection against the risks associated with exposure to ionizing radiation and for the safety of radiation sources that may deliver such exposure, six international organizations (FAO, IAEA, ILO, OECD/NEA, PAHO, WHO) jointly developed the International Basic Safety Standards for Protection against Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources (BSS)  These standards were published by the IAEA in 1994 and represent unified requirements and guidance common to the six sponsoring organizations
