Effective Internet Searching Goal: Identify key word strategies that will give you the best results Vocab – Keywords: most important words related to a topic you search for in a search engine – Precise: Clear and exact – Synonyms: words with the same or similar meaning – Alternative: a different way

Effective Internet Searching Search using key words, not sentences or questions. Good: stonehenge history Poor: I want to know more about the history of stonehenge Stick with KEYWORDS (informational) words, not CONNECTOR words!

Effective Internet Searching If you have two key words that you'd like to find together, place quotation marks around them. Example: “black holes”

Effective Internet Searching to eliminate words from your search results, type the minus (-) sign and the word you don't want to appear in the results. For example, when searching the topic, Holy Grail, you might consider eliminating Jay-Z and Justine Timberlake's names from the results so you don't get hits for their song of the same name. "holy grail" -Jay-Z -Justin -Timberlake

Effective Internet Searching If you want to include certain words in your search, type the plus (+) sign and the word you want to include. For example, adding the word mystery to your search could yield more relevant results. “easter island” + history
