ULICE Union of Light Ion Centres in Europe ULICE is a multidisciplinary initiative that involves all the major players in Europe in the field of hadrontherapy, integrating clinical, physical, biological, and technological knowledge ULICE structure : -General coordination: Roberto Orecchia, CNAO -Trans-national access: Juergen Debus, HIT -Joint research activities: Richard Poetter, Vienna University -Networking activities: Manjit Dosanjh, CERN Manjit Dosanjh, ENLIGHT Meeting, IFIC- Valencia, 19 June 2009 11

ULICE The development of new instruments, the transnational European access to the existing facilities and the different communities (researchers, clinicians, patients) requires a broad network structure. The overall aims of ULICE are: enable the full exploitation of all available resources access to information improvement of the existing and upcoming facilities Manjit Dosanjh, ENLIGHT Meeting, IFIC- Valencia, 19 June 2009 12

provide beam-time for external researchers through clinical trial programmes aimed at improving different technical aspects of the facilities. provide beam-time through ‘ open requests ’ from external researchers for radiobiological and physics experiments Manjit Dosanjh, ENLIGHT Meeting, IFIC- Valencia, 19 June 2009 13 ULICE: Transnational access

Develop methods to match the volume treated by active scanning particle beams to the target volume Develop novel adaptive treatment planning identify tumours that need the superior physical selectivity provided by ion beams Develop/investigate a new carbon ion gantry design Develop computer assisted patient selection program based on epidemiologocal and other data Manjit Dosanjh, ENLIGHT Meeting, IFIC- Valencia, 19 June 2009 14 ULICE: Joint Research Activities

European project: ULICE Status of the project: Approved (8.4 M Euro) Negotiation closed Grant agreement to be signed Project to start in 2009 Manjit Dosanjh, ENLIGHT Meeting, IFIC- Valencia, 19 June 2009 15
