2 Welcome to your very own aquarium! My Name is Eli and I’m the guide here. Unfortunately, you’ve come at a rather bad time as some of our invertebrate friends are lost. They need to get back to their proper phylum before dinner. I hope you can help me find their proper phylum! Click the button in the lower right hand corner and let’s go save some animals!

11 This is Polly, a sponge. Polly is an asymmetrical invertebrate, meaning that he has no lines of symmetry. Polly has no body openings. Pores cover his entire body allowing for him to get food and water. The meaning of his phylum in Latin is “pore bearer”. Rightly named don’t you think? 15 Click for next slide! This is Cindy, an anemone. Cindy has radial symmetry meaning if she were cut in half in any direction, each half would be the same as the other. Cindy has a single body opening, her mouth which she uses to chat up the other members of her phylum such as coral and jellyfish. Cindy is a polyps meaning she has a tubular body. Some of her friends have a medusae body meaning they freely swim thru the water. 19 This is Rhubarb, a flat worm. Rhubarb bilateral symmetry meaning he can only be cut one way and have to equal parts. His friends in his phylum include tapeworms and flukes. He has a single body opening his mouth which he uses to gain nutrients. Rhubarb comes from a phylum full of parasites, both good and bad. They move thru water using several different layers of muscle. His phylum is sometimes called the flat worm phylum. 23 This is Nala, a roundworm. She has bilateral symmetry and a single body opening, her mouth. Nala is joined in her phylum by her friends the hookworms and the pinworms. Her phylum moves by the contraction of muscles and thrashing back and forth. The meaning of Nala’s phylum name is “worm”. Click for next slide!

27 This is Annette, a bristle worm. Annette has bilateral symmetry and a mouth and an anus. The friends in her phylum include earthworms, polychaetes worms, leeches. The definition of Annette’s phylum is “arranged in rings”. All of the members of Annette’s phylum have segmented bodies. Click for next slide!

31 This is Marcus. His body has bilateral symmetry. His friends included in the same phylum as him are snails, clams, mussels, squids and octopuses. The members of this phylum have both a mouth and an anus. Marcus’s phylum is named after a nut that is soft with a thin shell. Marcus has a body without a cavity. 35 This is Emily, a star fish. Emily has radial symmetry except for when she was a little baby larva. She has both a mouth and an anus and hangs out with the other members of her phylum such as sea stars, sea urchins, cucumbers and brittle stars. Emily’s phylum’s name means “spiny skin”. 39 This is Archie, a spider. Archie has bilateral symmetry and both a mouth and an anus, located at their respected areas. The friends in his phylum include insects, crustaceans, other spiders, scorpions and centipedes. Archie is segmented into three parts, affecting both external and internal processes.
