Color- refers to color Colorless= most valuable Graded alphabetically from D to Z Fancy diamonds do not follow this rule carat- unit of weight Greater weight, more expensive

3 Determining a Diamond’s Quality Microscope/ loop Microscope shows inclusions in diamomd Diamond tester Light to very realness Qualiaty not gaurenteed Cirtification- certifies quality Should come from reputable source Could cost up to $200

4 Buyer Beware of “Treated” Diamonds Fill with glass to enhance clarity Treated with heat for color Used to turn to fancy color Color may change over time Painted for color to offset yellow color Wears off quickly Easily detectable

5 Caring for Diamonds After diamond is purchased, care for it so it does not get scratched or damaged Diamonds are brittle and can crack Diamonds should be stored separately from all other jewelry When a diamond needs to be cleaned, use a polishing cloth or bring to your jeweler.
