5  Growing fear of Communism!  But Why?  Spreading across eastern Europe and into Asia so that means a greater world population is under Communist control!  In 1950 population was... US/Western Europe = 345,342,000  Soviet Union/Eastern Europe/China = 841,795,000  Soviet Union was keeping up in Arms Race

6  Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed there were 205 known Communist working for US Department of State.  Spread fear of Communism through baseless charges – he had NO EVIDENCE!  Why do you think people listened to him?

7  Alger Hiss - 1948  Accused of being a spy for the Soviets  Although he denied the charges, evidence later showed Hiss had lied to HUAC.  In 1950 he was convicted of perjury (lying under oath) and sentenced to prison. Soviet documents decoded by American intelligence and declassified in the 1990s confirmed Hiss’s guilt in the case.

8  Nuclear physicist, worked on the Manhattan Project.  Transmitted information to the Soviet Union, including detailed drawings of “Fat Man,” from WWII.  After serving nine years in prison, Fuchs settled in East Germany.

9  Convicted of passing military secrets to the Soviets, including information from Ethel’s brother, who was an employee on the Manhattan Project.  Received the death sentence and were executed in 1953.  First U.S. civilians to be executed for espionage

13  President Eisenhower and Congress approved funding for a 40,000 mile system of high-speed roads in 1956.  Interstate system  Why now?  Not only public transportation, but mobilization of military supplies in case of an emergency or foreign invasion!
