Author George Orwell George Orwell was born in Motihari, Bengal, India, in 1903. He was a novelist, essayist and critic. “His father was a British civil servant and he spent his first days where his father was stationed.” “Orwell is best known for his novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four.” He died on January 21, 1950, in a London hospital but he is well known for his novels.

Theme Do the right thing. Don’t let others pressure you into doing something that you don’t want to do. The narrator let everyone pressure him, and he killed the elephant. He didn’t want to kill the elephant but he felt that he needed to do it to fit in. He just want everyone to like him.

Summary The narrator was hated by everyone in the town. He was faced with making the decision of killing the elephant. The elephant was having a must. The elephant was running wild through the town, and it killed a man. He decides to kill it just because he wants to fit in.

Characters/Speakers The Narrator: Young police officer in Burma in the 1920s, when Burma was part of British-controlled India. He strongly opposes the oppressive British rule of Burma and the rest of India. Sub-Inspector: Burmese officer who calls the narrator for help after an elephant gets loose in town. Black Dravidian Coolie: Indian laborer from the town of Coringa, India, who is killed by the elephant. Friend of the Narrator: Man who provides the narrator an elephant gun. Police Orderly: Person who fetches an elephant gun for the narrator. Mahout: Owner of the elephant. A mahout is a skilled elephant trainer and handler.

Conflict The narrator has an internal conflict with himself. He has to make the decision on whether to kill the elephant.

Resolution The narrator decides to kill the elephant because it killed a man. He didn’t think it would be safe to keep letting the elephant run free. He thought it would make more people like him if he killed the elephant.

Memorable line/passage “Alive, the elephant was worth at least five hundred pounds; dead, he would only be worth the value of his tusks- five pounds, possibly.” This line explains that he would be worth a lot more if he was alive. I really liked this line because it really describes of how valuable the elephant was.

Discussion Questions Do you think the narrator made the right decision by shooting the elephant? Do you think that more people would like him since he killed the elephant? What do you think was the real reason why he shot the elephant? Do you think the elephant would have been fine if he wouldn’t have been shot?

Interesting information I thought it was interesting that the.44 Winchester wouldn’t kill the elephant, so one of his friends let him borrow an elephant gun to shoot the elephant. I thought it was weird how the Burmans and the Europeans were divided on what should have been done after the elephant was killed.
