When you go to the theatre to see a movie, your attendance and how much you paid to see the movie are entered into a database. Data are collected from theatres all across Canada and the United States. Movie studios use these data to help predict how much money the movie will earn.

Shrek 2 was one of the highest-earning movies of 2004. DateEarning US $ millions Wednesday, May 19 11.786 Thursday, May 209.159 Friday, May 2128.340 Saturday, May 2244.797 Sunday, May 2334.901 Monday, May 2411.512 Tuesday, May 258.023 The table shows how much money Shrek 2 earned in Canada and the US for the first week it played. 1)Estimate first then find the combined earnings of: a) the first 2 days b) Saturday and Sunday c) all 7 days 1)Estimate first then find the difference in earnings on: a) Thursday and Friday b) Saturday and Sunday c) Sunday and Monday

Things to remember: 1) Estimate. 2) Always line up your decimals. 3) Carry over your numbers, to the digits in front. 4) Remember the “0” rule when subtracting. 5) Double check your addition or use inverse operations to check your subtraction.

When we add or subtract decimals, we estimate if we do not need an exact answer. We also estimate to check the answer is reasonable.

Donkey is a long-distance runner. His practice distances for 5 days are shown in the table. DayDistance (km) Monday8.85 Tuesday12.25 Wednesday10.9 Thursday9.65 Friday14.4 1)How far did Donkey run in 5 days? 2) How much further did Donkey run on Tuesday than on Thursday?

a)Use front-end estimation by adding the whole-number part of each decimal. 8.85 + 12.25 +10.9+ 9.65 + 14.4 becomes: 9 + 12 + 11 + 10 + 14 = 56 Donkey runs about 56 km. IF the number in the tenths place is 5 or more, add one to the number in front of it; If that number is less than 5, leave the whole number alone.

a) continued.... Either add the numbers together, or break down into smaller groups and add the two sums together. 8.85 12.25 10.9 9.65 14.4 56.05

b) Donkey ran 12.25 km Tuesday and 9.65 km Thursday. Estimate: 12.25 – 9.65 becomes 12 – 10 = 2 Subtract: 12.25 - 9.65 2.60 Text pages 98 – 99 Pizazz B32, B33
