UDL Academy Lesson Building Break out session Cohort 2 March 14, 2013 Rachel Currie-Rubin Allison Posey

Goal of this break out session Develop strategies: how to implement UDL in lesson design towards your district goal during this pilot phase

New considerations for lessons District goal UDL Goal of workshop: to develop 3-4 lessons per district – Feedback for Day 6, 7 – we will share ‘final’ Session 8: June 3

Examples: lesson that I already have remix a lesson from UDL Exchange lesson I co-teach PD lesson for other teachers

Share: What have you changed about your practice since learning about UDL?

Consider a lesson using Guidelines: MM Representation MM Action and Expression MM Engagement Why is this ‘UDL’ and not just engaging?

1. Revisit district goal: What is your district goal in this pilot phase? This will help guide your lesson. In our example, our district goal is to: Change educator practice in order to support student writing proficiency – measured with state writing test, weekly writing samples, posting bulletin board of work Align to Common Core

2. Choose a lesson for this pilot Will you work as an individual or with a peer? What lesson will you work on first? Examples: lesson that I already have remix a lesson from UDL Exchange lesson I co-teach

3. Follow the template in UDL Exchange

4. Reflect on process using UDL Guidelines What will you measure & observe in students? What UDL lesson design processes were helpful for you?

How UDL works Know goal (lesson & district) Know what will you measure – Before/after Consider UDL Guidelines before, during, & after lessons

For Academy sessions By next time, have a draft of a lesson to share – pre/post data that your team can think about to help think about your lesson design We will be happy to come tape your UDL lesson, or bring in a video! Have a colleague help you observe, measure. A ‘UDL’ lesson was designed thinking about UDL– it may not look different!

Planning time: Handout Which 3 lessons? – your team – enhance with UDL – hopefully to be implemented between week 7 & 8 Assign tasks to team members Set a timetable for completion Measurements/observations during delivery

Reflect What might be different ‘doing’ UDL? What are you excited about? What are you nervous about? Questions?

Reflect: What other educators say: UDL takes longer, but my students like my lessons more UDL makes it so more students are successful and I don’t have to reteach skills Start small: one UDL lesson this month… Share ideas with students: let them become active in instructional decisions to invest in what they need to do to be better learners! Can’t tell who the special ed students are in her class UDL, coteaching, and tiered instruction beneficial in reducing the proficiency gap for all groups by one half!

Clear goal: Flexible means!

In summary, lesson design with UDL: http://animoto.com/play/YLHE7PcWzzJSFlD07 AyvJw# http://animoto.com/play/YLHE7PcWzzJSFlD07 AyvJw#
