Ch 4.1 Slope (rise/run) Objective: To find the slope of a line when given a graph.
2
Key concepts: 1.Finding the slope using rise/run 2.Evaluating a ZERO slope 3.Evaluating an UNDEFINED slope
3
Definition Slope (m): rise/run When observing a graph, choose two points and count how many units up (rise) and how many units to the right (run) they are apart from each other. “Up” translates to positive units, “down” translates to negative units (in numerator) “Right” translates to positive units, “Left” translates to negative units (in denominator) Use when given a graph

x y Slope of a line Slope (m) = vertical change horizontal change rise run = = y x Slope (m) = +2+2 +1+1 +2+2 +1+1 m = 2 -2-2 -4-4 -4-4 -2-2 = Choose any two points – the slope is the same!
5
Example 1Example 2 Slope (m) = +1+1 +3+3 = +1+1 +3+3 1 3 = −1−1 +3+3 = −1−1 +3+3 3
6
Example 3Example 4 Slope (m) = +3+3 +2+2 = +3+3 +2+2 3 2 = −4−4 +3+3 = −4−4 +3+3 -4 3
