Sub-Disciplines Automotive Robotics Finite Element Analysis Safety Engineering Aerospace Computer Aided Design Source: https://www.asme.org/engineering-topics

Automotive The automotive is the sub-discipline which focus in the production, development and improvement of vehicles of transportation and cargo. This industry have been growing and new technologies like the electrical/hybrid cars are becoming more accessible. Source: https://www.asme.org/engineering-topics

Robotics Robotics is the combination between mechanic devices, electronics apparel and software to build an machine which can perform certain tasks that can not be done by humans. The following figure is a military robot used to respond to situation where a bomb is detected. There is a wide field to robotics in the industry, medical and security applications. 5 Finite Element Analysis Finite Element Analysis is a computational tool that allow engineers to simulate the behavior of any structure when this is deformed by some force. This technique shows the amount of deformation and it helps the engineers to prevent the deformations and how this can affect the users. The FEA software are becoming more advanced and allowing deeper analysis. Source: https://www.asme.org/engineering-topics

Safety Engineering The Safety Engineer has the task to guarantee the safest work environment for the employees. This engineer has to be aware about ergonomics, workplace safety and assure that the safety regulations are being followed. They also have to identify possible hazard situations and propose a solution. Source: https://www.asme.org/engineering-topics

Aerospace This sub discipline is focused on the developing and production of aircrafts, both military and commercial. This area also deals with spacecraft which are aircrafts that operate outside the atmosphere Source: https://www.asme.org/engineering-topics

Computer Aided Design Computer Aided Design (CAD) is useful to design mechanical devices using software that apply basics forms of drafting, lines and points, to create digital surfaces. Those software also can be used to simulate kinematics, analysis and drafting. CAD is a good option to design a product with lower cost and good quality Source: https://www.asme.org/engineering-topics

Young Engineers  Internship: Participation in Projects through research and development of new ideas.  The young engineer will learn and at the same time will help senior engineers inside the projects with calculations, simulations and analysis.  Required: Bachelor of Science, Good communication skills, computational Skills.  Job Opportunities ◦The mechanical engineer is necessary in many fields of industry.

Senior Engineering  Seek a high position in the company  Management  Give support to young engineering  Start an own business  Consulting

Specializations  Vibrations And Acoustics  Control, Dynamics And Robotic Systems  Biomechanical Engineering  Solid Mechanics  Thermal/Fluid Science  Manufacturing /Design Source: http://engineering.wayne.edu/me//pdfs/grad_handbook.pdf

Technology Drivers-3D Printers “3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file.” (Source:3dprinting.com/what-is-3d-printing/)

Technology Drivers-3D Printers Some Headlines “3D Printing in Space” ◦ The possibility of sending a CAD file the astronauts in the space and they be able to print their own tools or extra pieces, or even build a structure in space using printed trusses would save millions of dollars. “3D Printing Hits Home” ◦ 3D printers are becoming more accessible and is already possible have a 3d printer at home to little projects, like printing a mug. 14 Technology Drivers-3D Printers “3D Printing Houses” ◦ In an early future it will be possible to print houses, and according with the Dr. Berok Khoshnevis, who is the responsible for this project, print entire neighborhoods “World's first 3D-printed car showcased at 2015 Detroit Auto Show” ◦The first 3D printed car was showed in the auto show and it opened a new possibilities in the automotive industry.
