3 www.think3.com © 2007 think3, Inc. Automotive Sector as multiplier of growth With its deep backward (Iron & Steel, Aluminium, Electronics, Plastics etc) and forward (Supply Chain/Logistics, Warehousing, Transportation etc. ) linkages, Automotive Sector has been recognized as “very high potential area” for growth of GDP & employment, by the Planning Commission of India and Development Council of Automotive & Allied Industries. This sector has been seen as key Industrial growth multiplier although it facilitates the objective of increasing agricultural productivity, by better farm mechanization.

4 www.think3.com © 2007 think3, Inc. Potential: Some Facts (1) ‏ Current Car penetration level in India is 7 per 1000 Current passenger car market in India is about 1 million (2003-2004) ~ $6.2 Billion Expected to grow to 3 million ~ 20 $Billion by 2015 About 300 million people in India are above the $1000 per capita income level (middle class)‏ Purchasing power of the middle class is increasing at a rapid rate This shows that domestic market is on the verge of a major and sustained boom. Domestic Auto component market in India is $ 9.2 Billion which is expected to grow to $15 Billion.

5 www.think3.com © 2007 think3, Inc. Potential: Some Facts (2) ‏ Global Auto Industry is estimated to be $1.2 Trillion (2002) & is expected to grow to $1.7 Trillion by 2015 (Source:ACMA)‏ Sourcing from low cost countries (India, China etc) is $65 Billion (2005) & is expected to grow to $375 Billion (2015)‏ India’s share in 2005-2006 was $1.8 Billion. With quality servicing India can increase its share to about $20-25 Billion by 2015. Such high growth shall lead to at-least 0.75 million direct jobs (organized sector) & 1.8 million in the unorganized sector over next 8-10 years. This is in addition of creating 2.5 million indirect jobs over next 8-10 years.

6 www.think3.com © 2007 think3, Inc. Automotive Design & Employment Encompasses the entire spectrum from White- body design to components. Global Design spending is estimated at $7 billion (Nasscom) & is expected to grow to $20 Billion by 2015 Automotive design constitutes 68% It is estimated that $1 Billion spend on R&D creates 1 Lac jobs for automotive designers.
