Our mission The mission of the Center of Excellence for Airport Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is to develop new scientific knowledge and technology for the development, maintenance and operation of airports by conducting research in cooperation with government, industry and the private sector, enriching the engineering community through technology transfer, serving a diverse student population through educational programs, and educating the public to appreciate its investment in airport infrastructure.

The Center Model Attractive for large research programs Provides coordination, encourages collaboration, Sustained investigation and continuity Facilitates ancillary programs –Outreach activities for diversity and education –Technology transfer to OMP engineers High value to Center sponsors –Leverage via projects and shared administration

OMP, FAA and UIUC in partnership OMPFAA Subgrade issues Materials & Pavements Outreach Subgrade & pavements Wildlife issues Anti-icing Outreach

Common goals FAA and OMP are two major sponsors –Project costs separate and accountable –Center objectives unified and leveraged Leverage and Collaboration –Share administrative costs –Common research goals –Complementary Outreach Program –Greater visibility of Center activities

Our FAA partner Our FAA sponsor is at Wm J. Hughes Technical Center, Atlantic City, NJ –AIRPORT TECHNOLOGY R & D BRANCH –Contacts: Pat Watts, Director of COE Programs Satish Agrawal, Branch Manager David Brill, FAA COE Program Manager Extends a 9-year research relationship –Prof. Barry Dempsey was founding Center Director

Projects sponsored by FAA Pavement Research Program –Moisture curling of concrete slabs for airfield applications D.A. Lange and J.R. Roesler –Fatigue in Airport Pavements S.H. Carpenter –Materials Testing for NAPTF Base/Subbase and Subgrade Layers E.Tutumluer –Design of Flexible Overlay Systems for Asphalt Pavements: Phase II Advanced Model Development W.G.
